Commissions to Vicente Hansen, Bethan Morgan-Williams, Luis Puzo, & Thanakarn Schofield
Spaceship Ensemble, The Hague (NL)
In its 2027–2028 season, Spaceship Ensemble presents The Spaceship Concertos, a series of four new works by Luis Puzo, Vicente Atria, Bethan Morgan-Williams, and Thanakarn Schofield.
The four works take different approaches to the concerto format and to the relationship between soloist and ensemble. In Transistor, Luis Puzo uses the modular synthesizer to explore the possibilities of a solo part that unfolds entirely in real time. Vicente Atria’s Strange Machines combines synthesized harpsichord, microtonal harmonic fields, and Hawaiian lap steel guitar, drawing on the electronic sound world of Vangelis. Bethan Morgan-Williams’s new work for contrabass flute focuses on fragility, miscommunication, and resistance, bringing together folklore and natural imagery. Thanakarn Schofield’s accordion concerto reflects on diaspora through musical references to East and Southeast Asia.
The commissions for The Spaceship Concertos are supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
