Concert of the Ensemble Modern

The Ensemble Modern is the protagonist of a double concert within the Romaeuropa Festival, presenting works by four different composers representing a wide spectrum of contemporary and modern electronic music: Ondřej Adámek, Vito Žuraj, Unsuk Chin and Alva Noto.

Founded in 1990, the Fondazione Romaeuropa is one of the most renowned cultural institutions in Europe, actively promoting and disseminating art, theatre, dance and music. Established in 1986, the Romaeuropa Festival showcases the best of contemporary artistic creation and presents works by major, established international as well as young artists each year. This year’s edition focuses on the power of music and its ability to transcend geographical and temporal boundaries.

The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports the concert of the Ensemble Modern as part of the Romaeuropa Festival. In a double concert, four different composers will be presented who, despite different aesthetics and compositional methods, represent a very broad spectrum of contemporary and modern electronic music. In the first concert, Fantasie Meccaniche, the ensemble will interpret works by Ondřej Adámek, a Czech composer known for his experimental approach to music, combining acoustic and electronic sounds; Vito Žuraj, a Slovenian composer known for his eclectic style combining different influences; and Unsuk Chin, a South Korean composer known for her complex contemporary classical music and considered one of the leading composers in her country. The concert programme includes Karakuri – Poupée mécanique, a piece for voice and ensemble by Adámek; Fantaisie Mécanique by Chin; and Hors d’oeuvre by Žuraj, a piece for ensemble and chef, which will be performed live by two-Michelin star chef Daniel Gottschlich.

The second concert, Xerrox Vol. 4, focuses on Maestro Alva Noto, one of the best-known German minds in the electronic music scene, as the protagonist in an unprecedented encounter with the Ensemble Modern in an instrumental version arranged especially for the ensemble. The Xerrox project is based on the concept of digital duplication of source material and deals with the manipulation of data (melodies) through endless reproduction. The multimedia work combines music with video and light installations.
