Concert Tour and Workshops: STREIK
Schlagquartett Köln (DE)
The Schlagquartett Köln, together with guests, presents Enno Poppe’s work STREIK for ten drum sets in South America. In addition to concerts at festivals in Buenos Aires, San Juan, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro, the focus is on workshops, open rehearsals, and masterclasses to deepen the exchange with students, local musicians, and communities.
The drum set is generally regarded as a typical solo instrument. It drives a band, propels it forward, sets the tempo, and forms the engine room of the musical performance. An ensemble of drum sets has not existed until now. Together with guests, the Schlagquartett Köln initiated the unique project STREIK, which Enno Poppe composed for the Donaueschingen Music Festival 2024. Following its world premiere in Donaueschingen, STREIK has been performed at other major international festivals. Now the work is set to be presented in South America for the first time.
At the heart of STREIK lies interconnectedness: ten drum sets, which are essentially solo instruments, merge into a single ensemble, thereby unleashing a collective energy that transcends the boundaries of the instrument. This artistic principle is translated into a broader context through the South American tour: musicians from Germany and South America, festivals, universities, and local communities engage in exchange. In this way, the project connects not only instruments and performers, but also cities, countries, and scenes.
The concert tour and workshops by the Schlagquartett Köln featuring Enno Poppe’s STREIK are made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
