Concert Tour: Kurtágiana

Sonus Foundation, Budapest (HU)

Made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the Kurtágiana concert series celebrates György Kurtág’s 100th birthday with a tour across Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and Victoria (Canada). The project explores Kurtág’s music in dialogue with historical works and contemporary compositions that resonate with his aesthetic. Kurtágiana connects seemingly disparate musical eras and styles through shared gestures, epigrammatic forms, and approach to musical expression.

Central to the program are Kurtág’s compositions What is the World (1990–1991) and …quasi una fantasia… (1987–1988), both of which reflect his sensitivity to timbre, gesture, and spatial dynamics. As Robert Schumann is a composer Kurtág frequently references, Schumann’s Nachtstücke, Op. 23 No. 1, is additionally included on the program. Also featured are contemporary works which reflect Kurtág’s compositional style, including Beat Furrer’s Xenos, Marco Stroppa’s élet… fogytiglan, Nina Šenk’s Shadows of Stillness, Ying Wang’s SCHMUTZ, and Samy Moussa’s Orpheus in Nunavut.
