Concerts Featuring a New Work by Rebecca Saunders

Ensemble Resonanz, Hamburg (DE)

2019 Ernst von Siemens Music Prize winner Rebecca Saunders is composing a new work for Ensemble Resonanz. The piece is being composed for four string quartets, a double bass duo, and a conductor—an instrumentation tailored to the string ensemble that expands its core repertoire. Ensemble bassist Sophie Lücke and Rebecca Saunders have already collaborated closely to explore the technical and sonic possibilities of the double bass at an early stage. Direct dialogue with the composer is a key part of the creative process, resulting in a work that is developed closely in collaboration with the ensemble and remains compelling to perform over the long term. The composer plans to work with complex rhythmic overlays and polyphonic layering, exploring extreme sonic states: from maximum density to the greatest transparency and lightness.

The world premiere will take place in October 2026 at the Donaueschinger Musiktage, and the Austrian premiere at Klangspuren Schwaz in September 2027. Performances are also planned in Huddersfield, Amsterdam, and Hamburg.

The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is making the performances of Rebecca Saunders’ new work possible.
