Delian Academy for New Music
Ioannina (GR)
The Delian Academy for New Music is an international summer academy for composers that takes place on the island of Tinos in Greece. Under the patronage of Georges Aperghis and the Cultural Foundation of Tinos, the Academy focuses on conducting high quality educational programs for composers as well as new music concerts and research events open to the general public. This year’s Delian Academy for New Music is sponsored by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
Following an international call for applications, a committee consisting of Mark Andre, Natasha Barrett, Alexandros Spyrou, Ensemble Recherche and Reactive Ensemble will select the best applicants in each category in the run-up to the Academy based on the portfolios submitted. The committee also determines who receives the Iannis Xenakis Memorial Scholarship. There are three categories for participation: composition scholarship holders and sound artists. The selected scholarship holders will submit new or existing works to be performed by Ensemble Recherche and the Reactive Ensemble.
The academy will begin with a two-day symposium with lectures and Q&A sessions for composers. The aim is to familiarize the participants with the compositional thinking of others and to present their work in an open and stimulating environment. Master classes are also held to encourage, challenge and expand the students’ skills, experience and conceptual resources in terms of composition.
Composition scholarship holders have the opportunity to work on their pieces with the resident ensembles. All rehearsals take place in the main hall of the Cultural Foundation of Tinos and are open to fellow composers, artists and the public. The academy culminates in five concerts. Parallel to the main program, there are workshops and events for children and young people from the region.
