Distractfold’s 15th Anniversary

Distractfold Ensemble, Manchester (UK)

Made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, Distractfold celebrates 15 years of artistic collaboration with a three-day festival at Café OTO, exploring the intersection of sound, ecology and technology. In close collaboration with composers, these works showcase the ensemble’s distinctive creative voice, offering fresh perspectives on the spaces we inhabit and the sounds that emerge from them.

The festival invites us to reconnect with the ecosystems and landscapes that sustain us. In a time marked by political division and rising consumerism, a collective awareness of our shared environments becomes increasingly essential, guiding us toward a more harmonious coexistence with the natural world.

The festival opens with a focus on the ancient geology of our planet, featuring three works that explore the properties of limestone and its unique sonic qualities. Day two shifts to marine biomes, delving into the acoustic life of the oceans and our interdependence with marine ecosystems. The final day explores industrial landscapes and human-machine interactions, highlighting the latest innovations in music and sound art. Throughout all three days, new commissions will connect geolocation with its sonic expressions.

Distractfold hopes to inspire a renewed sense of interconnectedness among all who attend, with programs designed to spark enlightened perspectives on the environments we occupy—both natural and human-made.
