Four Commissions

The ARD International Music Competition takes place annually in September in Munich in four alternating categories. Since 2001, the already strong presence of contemporary music has been strengthened by the awarding of commissions to prominent composers. Each year, four commissioned compositions are awarded, which are premiered by the candidates in the semifinals.

The best interpretation of the commissioned composition will be awarded a special prize in each competition category. The candidates should show how they are able to deal with contemporary compositional and writing practices and unfamiliar sound worlds on their instrument within a time limit. For the year 2024, the composers Johanna Doderer (wind quintet), Marc-Anthony Turnage (voice), Cathy Milliken (oboe), and Marc-André Dalbavie (cello) could be commissioned with a work. The four commissions for the ARD International Music Competition are made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
