Four Commissions
Schallfeld Ensemble, Graz (AT)
For its 10th anniversary, the Schallfeld Ensemble is commissioning four works that will reflect the ensemble’s ties to the international contemporary music scene. The composition commissions to Anna Korsun, Pablo Galaz, Timothy McCormack and Franck Bedrossian are supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
The compositions by Anna Korsun and Franck Bedrossian will be presented as part of the ensemble’s first collaboration with the Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart at Klangspuren Schwaz. Anna Korsun’s work uses canon and trembling as the main technique. Not only the professional singers, but all the musicians use their voices in addition to their instruments. Franck Bedrossian is writing a cycle on the poems of Arthur Rimbaud. The new kind of fusion between vocal and instrumental sound he has in mind is reminiscent of Anna Korsun’s recent sound research, which is why these two works will be presented on the same evening.
The world premieres of the works by Pablo Galaz and Timothy McCormack will be performed in a separate concert series by the Schallfeld Ensemble. Pablo Galaz creates a new work for ensemble and electronics: “This project investigates the possibilities of combining different technologies to create hybrid sonorities and explore new musical dramaturgies. By employing highly sophisticated software to command signal processing and using modest electronic devices (such as small radios and transduce speakers), I aim to blend the capabilities of digital computers, AI and machine learning with the physical and palpable qualities of analogue gadgets.” Works by Timothy McCormack have already been heard in Graz, but Schallfeld now wants to create a context in which McCormack’s particular poetics – which usually find their best expression in longer or full-length works – are ideally showcased.
