Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2024
(UK)
Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival is a 10-day festival of contemporary and experimental music, presenting major premieres and works by some of the most exciting and original musicians working in the field of new music today.
In 2024, the focus is on creative music – with artists who defy genre categorisation and experiment with elements of contemporary music, drone, improvisation, electronica and even noise and metal.
Composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, who describes his music as creative music, will perform three concerts at hcmf// 2024, each showcasing a different aspect of his practice: a new work for 8 trumpets together with a new work by composer and sound artist Claudia Molitor; a concert of his string quartets performed by the Ligeti Quartet; and a performance of his Fire-Love Expanse, featuring Smith (trumpet), Mark Sanders (percussion), John Edwards (bass) and Ashley Walters (cello).
Composer in Residence at hcmf// 2024 will be Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė, whose performance-based practice flirts with pop culture, gender stereotypes and nostalgia by utilising performers in a wide range of genres from pop to opera. At hcmf//, Lapelytė will explore with her works the question of what we mean by the term composer in today’s sound world.
hcmf// 2024 is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
