LPO Young Composers Programme
London Philharmonic Orchestra (UK)
The LPO Young Composers Programme offers five emerging composers the opportunity to develop their compositional techniques and to further their professional development through tuition and support. With the support of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and mentor Tania León, each composer writes an eight-minute chamber work for an LPO ensemble, which is premiered in a public concert.
2023/24 marks the 19th year of the programme, which supports the best emerging composers as they transition from education to building their professional careers. Celebrated Cuban-American composer, conductor and educator Tania León succeeds Brett Dean as LPO Composer in Residence and Composer Mentor of the Orchestra’s Young Composer Programme in September 2023. León will be involved in the selection of the 2023/24 cohort, curate the artistic brief, lead individual seminars and group workshops, and conduct the debut concert in July 2024. The young composers will benefit greatly from working with Tania León during their year-long participation. In addition, the participants’ artistic development is fostered through mentoring and support from LPO players, guest conductors and artists, and participation in LPO concerts and rehearsals.
The programme replicates in a training environment the creative process through which composers are commissioned to write music for a professional orchestra, considering the limitations of a budget, the constraints of classical instruments and a set timeframe. The LPO Young Composers Programme is funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
