MMM///iii Concert Series

Ensemble Musikfabrik, Cologne (DE)

To mark the reopening of the WDR Studio for Electronic Music (SEM), the Ensemble Musikfabrik in Cologne is presenting the eight-part concert series MMM///iii
with a curatorial focus on the shared utopia of SEM and composer Harry Partch: to reinvent sound, composition, and the instrument. Radio-based art music meets radically physical music—historically informed performance practice meets new works. Key historical works and new compositions combine the studio’s legendary equipment with Partch’s microtonal instruments, bringing the historical electronic avant-garde into the present.

The MMM///iii concert series, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, treats the historic Studio for Electronic Music not as a museum piece, but as a productive instrument of the present. It demonstrates that analog studio technology not only possesses cultural-historical value but also continues to hold potential for artistic innovation. By combining the original equipment with new compositions, the studio becomes an active sound laboratory where historical techniques serve as starting points for contemporary practice.
