Musik objektiv – Musik subjektiv / Music for the very first time

Ensemble Lemniscate, Basel (CH)

Objectively speaking, music is subjective, or is it subjectively objective after all? When we humans experience art and music together, we share. Together we experience the same thing and sometimes add up the subjective perceptions of the others in the hall to confirm our perception.

Do you remember what it was like back then? Excitement, palpitations, fear of the unknown. Experiencing music, sounds, performances and situations for the first time again, entering new terrain, leaving the usual concert situation and letting your thoughts play, hearing with your eyes, seeing with your ears.

This season, Ensemble Lemniscate celebrates its 10th anniversary. As befits good celebrations, the ensemble switches into musical adventure mode and dares to experiment with the audience. Ensemble Lemniscate wants to break the concert format and create something new for itself and the audience from the leftovers using the means of music theatre and contributions from performance and sound art. In addition to a best-of of recent years, which will be presented at the beginning of the season, the ensemble will bring a variety of new formats and works to the stage that oscillate between the genres of music theatre, performance, sound art and new music. All refreshing and good in their own way, the works have one thing in common: their very nature sets them apart from the conventional concert format. This motto will run as a thread through the season – the search and curiosity for what has been hidden until now.

To this end, Ensemble Lemniscate has commissioned two emerging composers with ties to Switzerland, Anna Sowa (Basel) and Mauro Hertig (Zurich/New York), to work with the ensemble over the course of the year to develop two short music theatre/sound performances that will be premiered in March and May 2023. Accompanied by already existing cross-genre works, the ensemble also commissioned seven sound artists to penetrate the genre boundaries with their art. Thus, seven miniatures/etudes will be created for the events in March and May. These miniatures are conceptual statements or musical interventions with their roots in sound art. They range from installation moments to sound performances or music with machines and objects. All together there is enough fuel to break the genre boundaries. Ensemble Lemniscate thus presents an exciting and diverse artistic spectrum throughout the season. Between music theatre, sound art, music-theatrical ensemble pieces, performance and video art – in the hope of coming a little closer to the utopia of Gesamtkunst. The concerts on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Ensemble Lemniscate are made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
