NICE NOISE!
Continuum XXI, Dresden (DE)
In NICE NOISE!, a group of young people is invited to play and improvise together with the musicians of the Continuum XXI ensemble, to try out new sound possibilities, and to experiment with everyday objects. These improvisations are co-conceived and led by composer, harpsichordist, and lecturer Richard Röbel together with Tamara Miller and the ensemble. The improvisations are intended not only to offer a free musical form, but also to have a concept and a concrete goal: attentive listening to others and the necessity of creating something greater together with others. This is meant to serve as a mirror of our society, in which conflict and confrontation increasingly shape us. Can we, through active and collective listening, create something relevant that everyday life cannot offer?
The young people’s improvisations will be combined with world premieres by Richard Röbel and Tamara Miller. They are intended to address a specific musical focus: improvisation using only a single note (with variations in timbre, overtones, ornamentation, etc.) or only a rhythmic motif or structure, where non-European patterns and rhythms are explored. The goal of these improvisations is to foster careful and nuanced listening, creativity, imagination, and the liberation of young people from fixed structures, as well as the joy of experimentation. In a society flooded with images from smartphones, advertising, short videos, and entertainment, deep, transformative, and attentive listening seems more necessary than ever. In dialogue with the improvisations and world premieres by Richard Röbel and Tamara Miller, the piece crunch modes 2.0 by Eloain Lovis Hübner will also be performed.
The NICE NOISE! project is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
