No One Is an Island
Meitar Ensemble, Tel Aviv (IL)
No One Is an Island is a four-part concert series by Meitar, developed in response to the war in Israel and focused on coexistence, community, and artistic exchange.
The first project, Spirit, brings together young Palestinian and Jewish musicians in a flute choir mentored by members of Meitar. No Man Is an Island is a collective composition assembled from short contributions by around 100 composers from Israel, Palestine, Iran, Turkey, Europe, and North America. The contributions are combined into a continuous work without identifying the individual composers or their national backgrounds. This Is What I Think About Peace brings ten Palestinian and Israeli teenagers from Jerusalem together for a creative writing project at FeelBeit, an Israeli-Palestinian cultural center. Their texts on the theme of peace are set to music by professional composers, including Palestinian composers setting Israeli texts and Israeli composers setting Palestinian texts. The series concludes with Utter, a new evening-length work by Uri Kochavi for ensemble, electronics, and an extended multi-speaker system, developed in collaboration with the Na Laga’at Center in Tel Aviv. Performed in near darkness with the audience seated on the floor, the work explores sound and listening through an immersive electro-acoustic setting.
This concert series is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
