Ohrknacker 2024/25

From July 2024 to December 2025, Trio Catch will continue its innovative Ohrknacker (“Earcracker”) concert series with six new programmes and compositions by Farzia Fallah, Beat Furrer, Adriana Hölszky, Michael Pelzel, Inés Badalo and Georg Friedrich Haas at the Resonanzraum in Hamburg and the Musikbrauerei in Berlin. The special Ohrknacker format was founded by Trio Catch and initially trialled at the Bürgerhaus in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg. Since 2018, Ohrknacker has been further developed in cooperation with bastille musique at Radialsystem and Resonanzraum and has since established itself as a series. This foundation will now be built on with new editions.

An Ohrknacker event is organised in such a way that the work at the centre of the event is first played to the audience – most of them are experiencing the piece for the first time. The idea is to familiarise the audience with both the work and the understanding of the music from the perspective of the performers. However, unlike other concert formats in which a piece is first played, then analysed more or less musicologically by an external moderator and then played again, the personal aspect is the main focus of Ohrknacker: Trio Catch creates a concentrated and intimate situation in which the work is examined more closely and musically dissected in a mixture of conversation and moderation. This usually includes an exchange with the composers, who can give suggestions or be questioned by the trio and the audience. However, it is not just the compositional style that is analysed, but the entire personality. Depending on the situation, anecdotes or background information on the creation of the piece, any challenges in the composition or interpretation process, favourite passages – or rather unpleasant passages – can also be revealed.

Afterwards, the work is always performed a second time – between the two performances, the audience has not only got to know and understand the piece better, but also the three members of Trio Catch and the composers. The personal stimulation makes for a much more alert and differentiated listening experience, which ideally lingers on for a long time. It is truly astonishing how differently the audience perceives the second run-through each time.
