Premiere of a new work by Bára Gísladóttir

Riot Ensemble, London (UK)

Riot Ensemble and composer Bára Gísladóttir have a long and exciting history together. The ensemble premiered her work Suzuki Baleno at Nordic Music Days 2017 (Southbank Centre, London). The ensemble then co-composed and premiered a new chamber work – Seven heavens (of different heights (and depths)). Two years later, the Riot Ensemble co-commissioned and performed Animals of Your Pasture at the Transit (Belgium) and hcmf (UK) festivals.

Building on these successes, Riot Ensemble is keen to develop its relationship with Bára Gísladóttir and has commissioned a new, larger work from the composer to be performed on the closing night of Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2023. The performance is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

“The piece is slowly coming to clarity in my mind and its form works a little bit like an abstract landscape on a map, boasted by a strangely symmetrical pattern. I would like this symmetrical aspect to be quite literal; where the percussion plays a center role joined by a bass flute on each side. Two electric guitars form the setup’s cornerstones. The idea is not solely for the visual, but to create a figure that works both as a sound image when it comes to layering various textures, and as a tool for panic effects.” (Bára Gísladóttir)
