Rebecca Saunders’s Skull & New Music from Wales

UPROAR, Cowbridge (UK)

UPROAR presents a program of new music by three Welsh composers—Delyth Field, Daniel Soley, and Claire Victoria Roberts—alongside the Welsh premiere of Rebecca Saunders’s Skull.

Japanese-Welsh composer Delyth Field combines Japanese and Western musical traditions with references to the Welsh Mabinogion and the Japanese Tale of Genji, using projections and electronics. Daniel Soley’s piece takes as its starting point an ammonoid fossil he found on Penarth Beach in South Wales. The fossil’s connection to the Carnian Pluvial Episode and its parallels with the current climate crisis inform the work. Claire Victoria Roberts, who previously wrote a short piece for UPROAR during the COVID-19 lockdown, now develops a longer work for a larger ensemble. Skull, the final work in Rebecca Saunders’s Skin–Scar–Skull triptych, will be the first of her works to be performed in Wales.

This program is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
