Schaufeln | Brayen – Rain

Together with musicians from Innovations en concert and NO HAY BANDA, Ensemble Apparat presents the North American premiere of the work Schaufeln | Brayen – Rain by composer Max Murray for two sopranos, nine brass instruments, harp, percussion, and electronics.

Composer and project director Max Murray writes about the composition: “Inspired by Silvia Federici’s groundbreaking studies on the social experiences of women in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, the work’s somber tone draws on the tradition of radically devout Central European art, which emerged in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance as a reaction to the impoverishment and humiliation of members of rural communities. By focusing on this period of decisive transition toward early capitalism, parallels are drawn to our own existential crisis and the necessity of transformative social change in the 21st century. Brass instruments and voices, due to their connection to sacred music, are an ideal medium for building on this tradition. The addition of harp and percussion to the ensemble evokes a multitude of bells: both those of the herd and those of the church.”
