Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival
Stellenbosch (SA)
The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) is a distinctive cultural event in South Africa that combines world-class chamber music and orchestral training, making it one of the country’s leading contributors to musical education. Founded in 2004, the festival has grown to accommodate approximately 300 participants each year and is hosted at Stellenbosch University’s Konservatorium.
Every year, young musicians between the ages of 12 and 28 come together to learn from a distinguished faculty of national and international artists. The festival offers a wide range of educational experiences, including masterclasses, chamber music coachings, orchestral training, lectures, and performance opportunities. All evening concerts are livestreamed, providing valuable hands-on experience for students studying music technology.
In addition to its educational impact, the SICMF significantly enriches the local community, drawing an audience of around 10,000 to its performances each year and contributing to tourism in Stellenbosch. The festival’s primary mission is to use music as a tool for social unity and reconciliation. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the SICMF also showcases New Music—featuring contemporary and lesser-known classical works—expanding the musical landscape of post-apartheid South Africa.
