SWIM 2026 Concert Series

SWIM (Spatial Works and Immersive Music) is a concert series organized by ZiMMT e.V. that showcases music through spatial approaches and makes it accessible to a diverse audience. In 2026, three international luminaries of the contemporary music and sound art scene will be presented: Carsten Nicolai, Agostino Di Scipio, and Christina Kubisch. The program spans a spectrum from electroacoustic composition through new music to experimental electronic music and finally to expanded musical concepts in the context of two sound installations. The diverse cultural backgrounds of the invited artists, reflected in the social discourses and artistic content of their works, expand the thematic framework with current perspectives and create exciting new connections.

The portrait concert featuring Carsten Nicolai spotlights an artist who has made a significant international impact in the field of digital and audiovisual art. His work demonstrates how the precise use and consistent exploration of digital media give rise to new musical and artistic spaces of experience. In addition to his own concert contribution, Nicolai is developing new works in the run-up to SWIM 2026 in collaboration with young emerging artists, utilizing the infrastructure of ZiMMT. The results of this collaboration will be integrated into the evening and showcase the breadth of his practice.

With Christina Kubisch and Agostino Di Scipio, SWIM focuses on two seminal figures in sound art who exemplify the connection between contemporary music and approaches in the visual arts. Central to this is the role of the audience, which not only receives the work but is also an essential participant in the experience and constitution of the piece. The installation-based works are fundamentally interactive and offer visitors the opportunity to explore musical sound spaces at their own pace. Through individual approaches, perception, reflection, and exchange are equally encouraged. This is complemented by educational programs such as artist talks, guided tours, and group formats.
