SWIM – Spatial Works & Immersive Music
ZiMMT, Leipzig (DE)
swim 2024 / 2 is the second season of ZiMMT’s year-round concert and installation series swim, which provides a stage for artistic research-based music with a spatial approach and makes it accessible to an ever-growing audience. The Centre for Immersive Media Art, Music and Technology e.V. in Leipzig is a space for immersion: the immersion in pieces of music through the large-scale use of 3D audio and is a unique performance space far beyond the region. For the swim 2024 / 2 concert and installation series, which is funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, musicians from a wide range of backgrounds and genres are deliberately invited to engage intensively with spatial composition from different perspectives. In close collaboration with the 3D audio experts from the ZiMMT team, they are given the opportunity to develop, technically prepare and realise their concerts and installations according to their ideas. All invited artists will be given the opportunity to adapt their music to the special requirements of a 3D audio system and try out new artistic and technical approaches in the form of a three-day ‘micro residency’ at ZiMMT.
Three of the four concert evenings for swim 2024 / 2 are planned as double concerts, one as a portrait concert of the multi-layered work of an artist. As in the overall concept of the series, musicians with very different backgrounds and aesthetic and technical approaches have been deliberately combined on individual concert evenings. The works selected for swim 2024 / 2 take a particularly comprehensive look at the entire ZiMMT hall. The sound installations are fundamentally interactive in nature, giving the audience an active role: visitors can move freely at their own pace in the musical spaces created. The sound installations intuitively invite visitors to explore the space with the help of their own acoustic perception, to change their listening positions, to linger, to return and to enter into dialogue with the performers and other visitors.
