Three Commissions

For this year’s edition of the MUSICAHORA Festival in La Serena (Chile), the Kommas Ensemble from Cologne is creating two programmes. For one concert, together with the Symphony Orchestra of the University of La Serena, three commissions will be awarded to young Chilean composers: Macarena Rosmanich, Francisco Goldschmidt and Pablo Vergara. The three commissions are made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Francisco C. Goldschmidt (*1981), artistic director of the Kommas Ensemble, will create a piece for ensemble and wind orchestra. The solo parts are composed especially for all the members of the Kommas Ensemble. Pablo Vergara (*1980), one of the most exciting composers living in Chile, will create a work for violin and chamber orchestra. The solo part will be performed by Kommas member Johannes Haase. Macarena Rosmanich (*1981), one of the most representative voices of a growing scene of Chilean female composers, will compose a piece for orchestra. Lautaro Mura Fuentealba (*1983), conductor of Kommas Ensemble, will conduct the whole program.

The MUSICAHORA Festival is an annual public concert series in the city of La Serena, organised by the Music Department of the University of La Serena, which since 2004 has brought together performers and ensembles specialising in the premiere and performance of contemporary music. The aim of the MUSICAHORA festival is, on the one hand, to complement the education of the students of this educational institution by familiarising them with the most current forms of musical expression and, on the other hand, to make new music accessible to a wide audience in order to attract new listeners. The precarious situation and the almost total lack of spaces for the dissemination of New Music at a professional level is a cultural reality that initiatives like this festival are trying to change. On a national level, the MUSICAHORA festival is an important platform for the promotion of Chilean new music, premiering around 15 compositions each year.
