Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland: French-Language Premiere

Opéra Nice Côte d'Azur (FR)

For its 2027–2028 season, the Opéra de Nice will present the French premiere of Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland, as well as the world premiere of its French-language version, adapted by Antoine Gindt with the composer’s approval.

First performed in Munich in 2007, Chin’s first opera draws on Lewis Carroll’s surreal world through her distinctive musical language, characterized by rhythmic complexity, innovative timbres, electronic elements, and inventive vocal writing. The production will be conducted by Léo Warynski and staged by Antoine Gindt, featuring ten soloists, a chorus, 20 children’s choir members, and a 55-piece orchestra. Moving away from familiar visual interpretations of Alice in Wonderland, Gindt’s staging will feature an abstract set design, with costumes and accessories conveying the work’s fantastical and baroque elements.
