The w e i t ! neue musik weingarten festival in 2026 is dedicated to the music of composer Chaya Czernowin.

Czernowin’s work is characterized by her focus on the individual sound, a relentless search for emotional extremes, and a physicality of sound that reveals existential dimensions. A defining feature of the composer’s creative process is the use of metaphors to first analyze an unfamiliar sound world and then incorporate it into her own work. Her music challenges listeners to perceive and reflect on their own hearing by consistently probing the boundaries of the sound experience in a way that pushes the listeners themselves to their limits.

The retrospective, featuring the composer in attendance, at w e i t ! neue musik weingarten will be presented by outstanding performers of contemporary music in various ensemble configurations—ranging from solo recitals to ensemble music and large-scale ensemble works—and will be complemented by a lecture by the composer, a conversation with the composer, and—in collaboration with the Weingarten University of Education—an educational project.

Fundamental to the festival’s concept is thus the understanding of (new) music as a medium in which sensory-physical, structural, and existential aspects converge, contributing to an expansion of the audience’s auditory and experiential space.
