Anna Schürmer’s Inaugural Lecture at Freie Universität Berlin

16.6.2026

Anna Schürmer’s inaugural lecture will take place on June 16. She assumed the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Chair at Freie Universität Berlin for the 2026 summer semester.

The title of the inaugural lecture is: ZUKUNFT(((s)))MUSIK, or: New Music(ologies). She describes the content of her lecture as follows: “Future music is an ambivalent term straddling visionary aspiration and ideological projection; in common parlance, it denotes an improbable utopia. In my inaugural lecture as Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Professor, I will grasp, reframe, and renegotiate this concept: with a focus on New Music. Under the label “New Musicologies,” the lecture explores perspectives on sound research at the intersection of musicology and sound studies, historical analysis, and speculative sonic fiction. At its core is the question of how the future can be not only conceived but also shaped in and through (New) Music: Musicking Future – Futuring Music. The future will have been as we compose it.”
