Brigitta Muntendorf: It may be all an illusion
A blurry conductor, an actor taking off his make-up, excerpts from Joyce’s Ulysses or amateur musicians in YouTube videos: In Brigitta Muntendorf’s compositions, the material is by no means limited to intra-musical matters. With each of her works, she asks herself anew how a ‘work of musical art’ can be aesthetically justified and what it is capable of achieving. In doing so, she does not rely on conventions and ingrained rituals. From her perspective, the conditions of an artistic approach to the contemporary go beyond the framework of traditional performance practice. Muntendorf subjects the supposedly defined profession to a revision with each of her pieces: in what framework can music take place in order to legitimise itself as a contemporary art form?
