Philip Cobb

Philip Cobb comes from a family that has been closely involved with the Salvation Army’s music ministry for generations. In this context, he performed regularly as a soloist from an early age. He later studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Paul Beniston and Alison Balsom. During his studies, he played as principal trumpet with the European Youth Orchestra and began working with professional orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra.

He is a four-time winner of the Harry Mortimer Soloist Competition. At the prestigious Maurice André Competition in 2006, he was named the most promising trumpeter and in 2008 he received the Candide Award at the London Symphony Orchestra’s Academy for Wind Music.

His highly acclaimed solo performances include the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the opening ceremony of the Paralympics. Before completing his studies, he was appointed principal trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2009 at the age of 21. Despite his orchestral commitments, Philipp Cobb continues to cultivate his interest in brass music and is actively involved in newly founded ensembles.
