Commission to Bastien David

Orléans Concours International (FR)

In 2024, the Orléans International Piano Competition will blow out its first 30 candles. Since its beginnings, the competition has commissioned works for piano or for piano and other instruments (quartet, electronics, percussion…) from world-renowned composers such as Pascal Dusapin, Philippe Manoury or Héctor Parra, thus contributing to the contemporary piano repertoire. For the 2024 edition, the competition will for the first time award a joint commission with Ensemble Intercontemporain for a new work for piano and ensemble to Bastien David, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Bastien David is a French composer who conducts both aesthetic and instrumental research. He has proposed a completely original work: a concerto for piano and ensemble, but with three pianists playing the piano. And these three pianists are also accompanied by the percussionists of the ensemble, who play simultaneously on the strings of the instrument. It is a work that is meant to express the cohesion between the musicians: three finalists of the competition are not antagonists, after all, but help each other so that each of them brings out the best in each other – this is exactly the spirit of the competition of Orleans.
