Commission to Christina Kubisch
Babbel Productions, Paris (FR)
With support from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, Christina Kubisch has been commissioned to create a new work in collaboration with the Orchestra of New Creations, Experiments and Improvised Music and the Echonance Festival.
Titled Un jour dont on ne sait plus la couleur, the piece explores the intersection of orchestral music and electromagnetic sound. Kubisch, known for her long-standing work with sound induction and electromagnetic fields, brings her expertise into context through collaboration with a full orchestra.
The work begins with a traditional orchestral texture, which gradually gives way to sounds generated from the electromagnetic environment. Using custom-built induction devices, musicians will interact with both a written score and electromagnetic signals—such as those emitted by urban spaces, power grids, and lighting systems—bringing normally inaudible experiences into the concert setting.
By combining acoustic instruments with electromagnetic sound, the project challenges standard listening habits and invites a reconsideration of what is perceived as music. Rather than creating a contrast between “natural” and “electronic” sound, Un jour dont on ne sait plus la couleur integrates both into a shared sonic framework.
