Commission to Johannes Schöllhorn
Trio Catch, Hamburg (DE)
Inspired by Tiepolo’s cycle of paintings of the same name, Trio Catch and director Hannes Kapsch are developing DIVERTIMENTO, a musical theater of object theater, physicality, sound and movement. For the composition of the music based on the sounds created in the scenic pre-rehearsals, a commission is awarded to Johannes Schöllhorn, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
The archaic figure of Pulcinella, who causes everyday life in the 18th century to come apart at the seams, forms the starting point for the work. From the countless motifs of Domenico Tiepolo’s 104 etchings, the artists distill Pulcinella’s characteristic conical hat as the archetype of the scenic and musical realization. From the hat grows an entire world that inexplicably manifests itself in the concert hall. The stage world changes all those who come into contact with it. Thus, the musicians already seem to grow together with the environment; through sounds, noises and music they give this place a voice. For the signs and the music come to life, ever new beings emerge – suddenly animating hats, mysteriously shimmering hats, tiny intertwined and huge composite chimeras.
DIVERTIMENTO is an invitation to see the world anew, because no more agreements apply. No more languages, but noises, sounds, music, signs and dazzling attributions, crossing levels of meaning and sense, which generate their very own logics. A familiar-unfamiliar world of its own between reality and dream, artificiality and organic naturalness, as irritating as it is poetic.
