Commission to Manuel Contreras Vázquez und Fernando Matus de la Parra

Centro de Investigación Musical Autónoma, Valparaíso (CL)

Made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the Centro de Investigación Musical Autónoma (CIMA) has commissioned new works from composers Manuel Contreras Vázquez and Fernando Matus de la Parra. Based in Valparaíso, Chile. CIMA is an independent institution that has made significant contributions to contemporary music since its founding in 2014.

CIMA and the two composers share a commitment to exploring the creative possibilities that emerge from Chile’s peripheral position in the global musical landscape. Additionally, they engage themselves with the cultural and territorial concerns of Latin American First Nations heritage.

Fernando Matus de la Parra, based in southern Chile, creates site-specific works that combine conventional instruments, acoustic interactions with the natural environment and themes of rituality and the worldview of indigenous peoples. Dr. Manuel Contreras, based in northern Italy, approaches his compositions through a concept of cartography as a form of navigation, reflecting on issues related to Latin American First Nations and the implications of timbre.

While each composer retains full artistic autonomy, CIMA stipulates that the commissioned works incorporate key regional instruments, including modern and baroque oboes, English horn, quena, quenacho, and panflute, alongside vocalists from the Taktus Ensemble.

These commissions will be presented in free public concerts, accompanied by lectures and audiovisual documentation.
