transmediale, Berlin (DE)
Jennifer Walshe explores the interplay of voice, sound, language, and machine learning in her work CONTENT ENDEAVOURS. The world premiere of the 40-minute composition, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, can be experienced at the transmediale festival 2023 in Berlin at the Akademie der Künste. Jennifer Walshe (voice) and her cooperation partner Wobbly (Jon Leidecker, computer-aided part) will interpret the work.
CONTENT ENDEAVOURS is an in-depth continuation of Jennifer Walshe’s artistic exploration of the intertwining of voice, sound, language, and machine learning. The commissioned work questions the role of listening and linguisticality in times of speculative hype around technological developments, climate collapse and spreading social and financial insecurity. Walshe’s work raises the question of how sound becomes a meaningful part of making sense of and shaping these circumstances. The composition was developed using machine learning algorithms. In doing so, the content draws on data sets that bring together the artistic understanding of and engagement with Machine Learning with collected promotional materials from Jennifer Walshe’s private archive. These promotional materials propagate emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain and NFT and are speculatively spun through the datasets. Walshe’s work includes lighting design and video, which also address this theme.
