In Espèces d’espaces, Georges Perec delves into the concept of space and how we navigate it. He writes, “The space of our lives is neither continuous nor infinite, neither homogeneous nor isotropic. But do we know precisely where it breaks, where it curves, where it disconnects, and where it gathers?” His philosophical essay raises the question of how we exist within and move through the spaces we occupy.

In recent years, we have faced a global pandemic, war, the threat of totalitarianism and the escalating crisis of climate change—events that have often triggered or forced migration. Our understanding of home has been redefined, and many have lost family members, neighbours and familiar surroundings. In this context, the artist is left to make their mark on the world using what remains, often picking up the pieces from a fractured reality.

Composer Philippe Hurel collaborates with stage director Alexis Forestier to bring Perec’s words to life on stage. The performance, featuring the Ensemble Court-Circuit and conducted by Jean Deroyer, involves two characters— a singer/actress and an actor—who interact with a screen on which excerpts from the text are projected, and a speaker playing recorded passages. These elements express different functions in a “nervous counterpoint,” without colliding or becoming fixed in one role. Each part oscillates between various functions—playing, singing, commenting, announcing, listing, improvising—creating a dynamic experience for the audience.

This performance, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, is designed for both students and adults. Audience members additionally have the opportunity to meet with stage director Alexis Forestier for a discussion about the text and its journey from book to stage.
