Four Commissions

Black Page Orchestra, Vienna (AT)

The Black Page Orchestra has had its own concert cycle in the New Halls of the Vienna Musikverein since 2020. In these concerts, the orchestra presents current musical positions through expressive works, but also leaves room for experiments and world premieres. This season, the orchestra will premiere five works by young but also established composers. The commissions to Peter Ablinger, Nava Hemyari, Mirela Ivčević and Soyeon Park are supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

The concerts will focus on the relationship between the individual and society, a topic that has become particularly topical as a result of the pandemic. The first concert under the motto Immersion – a term from virtual reality technology that describes the immersion in another reality, a being pulled in, reinforced by possibilities of personal interaction with the surrounding – is intended to dissolve the concert set-up, the separation of audience space and stage, i.e. the breaking of the fourth wall. The Black Page Orchestra wants to play the hall in a new way, around the audience and over the galleries, with new 24-channel loudspeaker systems and spatially distributed musicians. The aim is to make full use of the possibilities that were not available in the recent past for understandable reasons due to the pandemic.

In the second concert, Courage, the focus is on the individual, the assertion of the individual in society. Pieces with a political stance, but without propagandistic political instructions; works and composers whose work focuses on diversity, eccentricity and autonomy will be presented.
