Heroines of Sound Festival

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the Heroines of Sound Festival presents a large-scale programme with early heroines of electronic sound as well as current positions from contemporary art music to performance, sound art and advanced pop. Feminist, diverse and cross-genre, the festival, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, strengthens the presence of artists in the art and music world and makes it possible to experience the connections between different genres.

The 2023 programme offers 12 concert events as well as a sound art exhibition in Berlin with over 60 artists from 17 countries of origin. This year’s festival is dedicated to microtonal music, drone and noise: Starting with the French composer Pascale Criton (1954*), a student of Wischnygradsky who has hardly been known in Germany so far, to younger artists such as Maja Bosnić, Stephanie Schweiger, Clara Maïda and Marina Khorkova, who develop a sound language from the tradition of microtonality and musique concrète that leaves behind tender “overtone chirping” and is characterised by metallic hardness, inhospitable frequencies and raw noise values. The Black Page Orchestra also creates a physically extreme sound world. New works by Beatriz Ferreyra and Elisabeth Schimana complete the programme. In current works by Annesley Black, Ann Cleare (UA) and Sara Glojnarić, the electric guitar conquers contemporary instrumental music; the 13-member Berlin electric guitarist ensemble around Maya Shenfeld realises a re-enactment of Julius Eastman’s Gay Guerrilla with an all-female cast.

The Norwegian artist Tine Surel Lange will make her first appearance in Berlin with a sound-ecologically conceived concert installation that focuses on Arctic landscapes performed by Ensemble KNM Berlin. The new work will be produced with partners from Kiel, Norway and Denmark and performed at all Ensemble KNM venues. With a residency and a sound art exhibition, the cooperation with the art house Sonoscopia (Porto) and the Berlin artist collective Errant Sound will celebrate its premiere. The festival also cooperates with partners abroad, in 2024 for the first time with Sonic Matter (CH), MEN (Wroclaw), Artic Art Festival (NO) and Frequenz Festival (Kiel).
