Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival

Stellenbosch University Department of Music (ZA)

The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SIMCF) is the only festival of its kind in South Africa that combines both chamber music and orchestral performance and education. It has played an important role in redefining the nuanced culture of classical music in South Africa over the past 20 years. The first SICMF, which took place in 2004, was initiated by the current artistic director, Prof. Nina Schumann. Together with her colleague, pianist Prof. Luis Magalhães, and a student assistant, she organised a festival for which 50 students were to register. And 100 students registered! The number of student participants and lecturers has more than doubled in the last 19 years. Around 300 students now take part every year, mainly aged between 12 and 28. They are divided into chamber music groups. In addition to the chamber music group courses, the programme also includes individual public masterclasses, orchestral training, performance opportunities, training in music technology, the opportunity to hear concerts by their world-class teachers and an interview/lecture series entitled in conversation with. Lessons are offered in piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, conducting and music technology. The SICMF, which is being sponsored this year by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, will culminate in three concerts by the two symphony orchestras made up of the participants.
