Three Commissions
Continuum XXI, Dresden (DE)
What role do extremes play in our society and how do artists deal with them? Which of their relevant elements and characteristics have value today and how can we reflect on them in order to use them as individuals and society? Extremes mean borderline proximity and transgression, danger, inhospitality, exaggeration and often destruction. At the same time, there are impulses and motivations to the extreme.
In a concert entitled Musik der Extreme – Figuren von Wut und Fragilität (Music of Extremes – Figures of Rage and Fragility), aspects of the extreme as well as extreme attitudes and emotional states will be reflected musically, as will the fragility and limitedness of the person and of living and reasonable orders in general. Paradigmatic examples from new and old music will be framed by spoken, short music-philosophical reflections. Three commissioned compositions will be premiered, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation: Helga Arias develops pieces in which the finely differentiated, static, intimate and at the same time explosive intensity are important aspects of the listening experience. Her compositional style thus offers special potential for a concept of the music of extremes. Raphaël Cendo composes a piece in which the limits of human perception and orientation can be experienced. Manuel Sánchez lets the instrumentalists explore the limits of their instruments.
