Transparent Sound New Music Festival 2025

Pro Progressione, Budapest (HU)

The Transparent Sound Music Festival is a series of events for new music that has been held annually in Budapest since 2013. The festival was founded by a handful of progressive composers with the purpose of introducing the audience to the current musical and multimedia trends of the international scene and to masterpieces of 20th century music.

The 2025 edition, which is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, will include pieces by Michael Jarrell, Enno Poppe, Peter Eötvös, Bogusław Schaeffer, Jessie Marino, Márton Illés, Bianca Bongers, Einaz Seyedi, Niels Rønsholdt, Vito Zuraj, Gérard Grisey, Klaus Huber, Kaija Saariaho and Philippe Manoury, performed by renowned interpreters and ensembles such as Scenatet, Quasars Ensemble, Ars Nova Ensemble, ensemble XXI. jahrhundert, Pinguins Percussion Trio, Kollektiv Unruhe, Marco Blaauw and The Monochrome Project, Trio Dakoda, Joonas Ahonen, to name just a few of the international guests invited for 2025.

The name of the festival has a double meaning: on the one hand, it emphasises transparent communication about music by approaching music objectively, critically and analytically, with a great deal of respect but without historical pathos, and also conveying this attitude to the audience. The aim is to create a discourse at eye level with the audience. An interactive introduction to the work takes place before almost every event. The audience is encouraged to take part in short verbal sound and noise experiments with instructions so that they can experience the music directly and physically. The mission of the Transparent Sound New Music Festival is to break down inhibitions and barriers to listening to highly complex new music without compromising on quality. The name of the festival also emphasises the importance of the visuality of the music – a particular focus of the festival is on multidisciplinary collaborations and the performativity of new music.
