WeCompose: Composition and Creativity in Secondary Schools

Music in the Round, Sheffield (UK)

In England, there are significant disparities in access to high-quality music education. Recent educational policies and funding cuts have marginalized music in state schools, with over 50% of state-funded secondary schools no longer offering music education to students aged 11-13. These inequalities extend beyond the classroom, as individuals from more privileged backgrounds are twice as likely to secure employment in the cultural sector, further perpetuating cycles of exclusion and limited opportunity.

In response to these challenges, the WeCompose project aims to widen access to music composition for secondary school students across the country, particularly in areas where it is lacking. By connecting young people with professional composers and musicians, the project provides ideal opportunities for creative growth and learning. Through group and individual composition activities, students receive firsthand experience in the process of music-making process while gaining confidence in their artistic abilities. Additionally, teachers receive training and resources to better equip them to teach composition, ensuring a lasting impact on the music education system. With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, WeCompose seeks to democratise music education and inspire young people to pursue careers in music that they may not have otherwise considered.
